Welcome to Don't Call Me Midlife. This summer, we're shaking things up a bit with our special series called Survive or Thrive. We know moms are extra busy during the summer, so we're bringing you shorter, bite-sized episodes, focused on one hot topic at a time. Join us as we share tips, stories and laughs, helping you decide if you're just getting by or truly thriving this summer. Alex hi, how are you? Hey, how are you? I'm good, I am good, I am thriving. So far this summer. That's good. It just started, though. It just started.
Speaker 1:I feel like the end of school was so crazy that I'm just starting to feel like it's summer, which is always a good thing, you know. Yes, yes, I hope you get to like that place of Zen and relaxation, because you had quite the doozy of a month. Me too. Your May-Sember leaked into June. I think I called it. I was telling a friend, nicole, it was June-Sember too. I think I need to remember this for next year too. I think I need to remember this for next year. We lessons learned, lots of busyness, all good stuff.
Speaker 1:What is in your cup today? Okay, I am so excited to share this with you because, one, it is way outside my box and, two, it is something that you have recommended. I made it and I haven't had any of it to drink yet. So I'm going to show you. Do you recognize it? Maybe it's hard to see, but it's a water with chia seeds and lemon and I put a little sprinkle of Himalayan salt, so pink salt. Okay, this is big for you. It is big. This is like live trying of it, live taste testing. I know I brought a straw so not to be gross, but it does look a little bit like bird poop. But I'm open-minded. Okay, try it. Try it, see if you like it. It's good for you. Lots of good fiber. Be ready, be ready. It's not bad. It's definitely acquired an acquired taste. I would have to say Do you put lemon in yours? It's definitely acquired an acquired taste. I would have to say Do you put lemon in yours? I do. If you don't like chia seeds, I mean, obviously you can't drink it, but there's also something called basil seeds, which my friend in Chicago told me about that. Don't get as like gelatinous, you know. Then chia seeds get really like the bubble tea.
Speaker 1:But I like that drink to start your day out. It keeps you regular. I just think it feels good. There's fiber, there's protein. I just think it's a good way to start your day. Yeah, do you just put one tablespoon of chia seeds? Well, you work up to more, nicole. You work up to more. Oh, okay, you work up to like two tablespoons. I started with one teaspoon and then did two tablespoons at the end. So it takes a while for your body to get used to and I definitely recommend working up to that for sure.
Speaker 1:What's in your cup, alex? Ooh, I'm excited about what's in my cup because it has to do with our topic today about skincare. It is some watermelon collagen powdered collagen that you put in your water from Hue and Grace. It is so good and watermelon is like the perfect summer flavor. So I put some in my Stanley and I love it, because I do put collagen in my coffee too. But I like how it can also be a cold drink and this tastes really, really good. It's like a like lighter than like a crystal light, you know, like it just adds some flavor to your water. Again, it helps you drink your water. So is it sweet? Yes, and it's good for my skin. It's not too sweet. I feel like you would like it. I'll link it below. We'll link it below, all, right. So enough of our drinks.
Speaker 1:We just went on like a five minute tangent about drinks, okay, yes, uh, we have to really talk about our topics, since, since these episodes are fast, we are not used to this yes, okay. So skincare we are talking about summer skincare for us midlife ladies, and for those of you that don't know, I was a makeup artist and I worked for several years with Bobby Brown and Mac and Laura Mercier, and we were trained across all skincare lines, and so I feel like I have a really good knowledge base. And I know, alex, you have some questions. I don't know if you want to ask me or if I should just jump in. I'll ask. I'll ask because I know nothing about skincare.
Speaker 1:So when I think of skincare, nicole, in the summertime, I do think of like SPF, right, I think of skincare Nicole in the summertime, I do think of like SPF, right? I think so. Do you have? I feel like, as we are ladies in midlife, spf is, like, so important. And you're wearing a sun shirt, we wear the hat, we wear the sunglasses. I see this more and more with myself and our friends. So do you have a favorite sunblock for midlife ladies, oh geez.
Speaker 1:I personally love Elta MD. I love it because you can get it in the typical. You know it comes out clear or they do have a tinted, which is it's very sheer coverage, but it just kind of evens you out a little bit. I also like for, like, a pool day or a beach day. I like Super Goop. That is one of my favorites, my favorite. Hands down. We get those big bottles that you have to pump the pumps one. We even bring that to Colorado, you know, because my husband and my family, my kiddos, are all very fair skin. Yes. So here's a tip I like to buy a couple of them, especially in the summer, but I like to keep them in the shower for myself, especially because as soon as I get out of the shower I always moisturize.
Speaker 1:But my first step will be to use the skincare all over. That way it's just kind of like done. Obviously you have to reapply, but if you just do it right after the shower, like something you don't even have to think about and it absorbs pretty quickly and it's not super thick or tacky. So wait, so you put sunblock all over your body. Yeah, like if I know I'm going to be wearing shorts or short sleeve shirt. Yeah, I just don't put it on my face. I mean this, this is a yeah, this is a habit that I that I got into once I moved to Colorado. So my skincare habits have like skyrocketed since moving here.
Speaker 1:People told me they're like, when you're here, just leave sunblock in your car, in your purse, you know, whatever little pocket you have. It's kind of like the chapstick, but here, here, it's sunblock. So I have different types of sunblock all over my, my, my house and my car and different formulas. Like in my car, I use the. It's like a mineral powder. So I know Supergoop has one and I really like the one from Tarte. So it's just in a little handheld thing and then you push the bottom, there's a button and it comes through the bristles and I'll put it on my hands, because when you're driving, your hands are just constantly in the sun.
Speaker 1:So, yeah, and you know, for touching up throughout the day, right, it's important to reapply, especially if we're going to be like on the beach, or my kids always don't think they have to reapply In the summertime. I would think we don't need as much hydration, right, because it's summertime. Is that the wrong way to think about it. Like, how should skincare be different from the winter time? I mean, whether you live in Colorado or Boston or Florida? Like what should our our routine be with our serums or our lotions? You know, comparatively? Should it change? Well, let's.
Speaker 1:If you just look at your own personal skincare, that's going to dictate how you are going to choose your products. So for me, when I lived in Michigan, it was very humid, so it was very oily. I would choose an oil-free based moisturizer. So I think one of the biggest misconceptions is that you don't need a lot in the summertime, but actually the sun isn't very drying. I mean, have you ever gotten a sunburn and your skin almost feels chapped? Yes, yes, oh, that's a good point.
Speaker 1:So I would continue to make sure that you use, first and foremost, an SPF and then, secondly, make sure you're using a moisturizer that's best for your skin. And if you don't know what kind of skin you are, you can talk to anybody at like a cosmetic counter or your esthetician and they can. They can help guide you to find out if you're dry and there's like different types of dry. There's like the dry, cracked skin, and then there's like flaky dry, and so you know, there's just different things, but just make sure that you're wearing a moisturizer. I know a lot of women when I worked in cosmetics just didn't like the feeling of heavy skincare during the summer. So that's just also something to consider.
Speaker 1:If you use, like, a vitamin C serum, that would be great in the summer because that helps target like fine lines, wrinkles and dark spots, and so and that's the one thing about the sun is that it does give you, it does give you those little freckly dark spots, and so the using a vitamin C serum will help diminish the darkness. So that will it's like counteracting continue to put your serum, your serum and then lotion, yeah, okay, okay, that's what I normally do, right, but if you, you know, if you're oily, you might want to skip your like a face oil or eye cream. It just, it really just depends. But I would stick to the basics SPF, vitamin C and moisturizer. And then, at night, if you want to slather it all on, cause you'd feel extra dry or or not, you know, just, it's kind of more personal preference, but I wouldn't stop moisturizing or using SPF, okay, cause that would be what I would think is like oh, I don't need my like moisturizer at night in the in the in the summertime, but I see I can understand that's a really good like basic point that the sun is drying. Don't forget that right, drink your water. You still need a good skincare routine, especially cause you're going to be in the sun a lot, right, drink extra, extra water. You know, wear the hat, use like a self-tanner, like if you're wearing the hats and the SPF and like your face starts getting lighter than your body or you know, you just don't want to be in the sun but you want a little glow use. You know, I'm trying to think of what I use. What are those little droppers called? I was going to say what's your favorite self-tanner. We're going to get a question about what's your favorite self-tanner because I think, like I think everyone looks better with a little sun. Yes, right, I love. I think it's called Lux. I'm like drawing a blank, yeah, yeah. So I used two little drops the other day and Jerry was like oh, you look so dark. Oh, really, yeah, because normally I can use like three or four, but I just used two, but maybe it just came out larger than it typically does. And then I do like Clarins. And then my all-time favorite favorite is Sicily. Sicilia I don't know if I'm saying it right, but that price point is really high. Clarins is probably like on the lower end and then Lux is right in the middle, but those are my top three, top three favorite.
Speaker 1:Do you ever use those bronzing drops? You know what? Every time I go to buy it, it's sold out. My friend Olivia is obsessed with it. Oh my gosh. And so sometimes I love it. I love it too. Yeah, okay, I have to get it. It just washes off right, you just mix it with your foundation and it gives a little glow. Yeah, oh, okay, yeah.
Speaker 1:And when I was in Vegas, I noticed I went to Sephora because I don't normally go there and they have like a blush bronzer drops too that are really really pretty. It's almost like that, charlotte Tisbury, you know that glow that you put. Well, I don't know what that spot is called. If you want the T-zone that T-zone, I don't know they have some really good stuff. I know a lot of the like teenagers like it, but I definitely I have those. So I recommend that for like quick and easy. Yeah, I'm definitely going to have to try it. I'll wait till the next Sephora sale. But yeah, that's basically it.
Speaker 1:Just, you know, stick to your, stick to similar routines and just make sure that you're wearing an SPF so you can thrive in the summertime. So you, you're saying you're thriving with SPF or with skincare in the summertime. Yes, my skin is thriving, you know your skin is thriving. Okay, my skin is not thriving, but I would say I want to thrive. So this is aspirational for me. So I love the tips that you said and I'm going to actually just even think about the way that I treat my skin in the summertime a little bit more. So I hope you ladies out there do too, so that your skin is nice and glowing and protect yourself, I think too. But let's thrive, nicole, with our skincare this summer. Let's do it. Let's do it.
